From STAFF REPORTS
The Alverno Jaguars faced the Sacred Heart Comets in their final home game of the regular season. The Jaguars celebrated their Senior Farewell with a 4-0 victory over the Comets and improved their record to 6-1-1 (8-4-2 overall).
The Jaguars dominated the match with 7 shots on goal and a corner kick in the first half and 8 shots on goal and a corner kick in the second half. The Jaguars defense did not allow a single shot on goal and only gave up 1 corner kick. Junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin (1) recorded her fifth clean slate of the season.
After 35 scoreless minutes, sophomore midfielder Megan Cavender (22) passed to sophomore midfielder Beatriz Rivas (16). Rivas’s shot was blocked by the Comets goalkeeper, but junior midfielder Natalie Scigliano (5) was in the penalty box to fire a goal past three defenders at the goal line. The Jaguars led 1-0 at halftime.
In the 49th minute, team co-captain senior forward Larissa Hernandez (21) was fouled on a breakaway at the touchline. Junior midfielder/defender Nikki Oberhammer (17) scored on the ensuing free kick. In the 56th minute, Oberhammer dribbled through two Comets defenders, and her shot was bobbled by the Comets goalkeeper. Hernandez was there in front of the net to put in the loose ball for a goal. In the 61st minute, co-captain senior defender Nicole Lianto (6) connected a pass to freshman forward Nancy Alcala (15) for the punctuating goal.
The Jaguars will face Ramona Convent on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Ramona Convent campus.
About Alverno Heights Academy
Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra Madre, California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of St. Francis who sought to create an environment in the San Gabriel Valley where young women could become informed and knowledgeable persons. Later renamed Alverno High School and sponsored by the Immaculate Heart Community, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical—has been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students. As Alverno Heights Academy once again, the school remains committed to its mission by encouraging each of their young women to be who they imagine.
