From Staff Reports
The much-awaited Pasadena-Muir rematch set for Thursday night in the regular season finale was canceled in the second quarter.
With Pasadena ahead, 24-21, the game was called because the floor was too wet and slippery for the players safety.
Luckily for both schools and CIF, Pasadena had already clinched first place in the Pacific League and Muir second, so the playoff seeds would not have been affected by either outcome.
Pasadena is having construction done, and while the earlier games were played, the crowds were much smaller.
When the gym filled up for the varsity game, the humidity was just too much and player’s safety was the overriding concern.
“The floor was wiped up multiple times and to no avail,” Pasadena coach Tony Brooks said. “The decision was made for the safety of the kids. On to the playoffs!”
As disappointed as both sides were, neither coach questioned the decision to cancel the game.
“The kids safety was most important,” Muir coach Simaine Stewart said. “Pasadena is a great team, they won Pacific League for 13th time, hats off to them. We are 2nd, now we prepare for playoffs. Good luck to both teams. We will support each other. We are from same community.”
Pacific League Standings:
Pasadena (20-5 overall, 13-0 in league)
Muir (17-8, 10-3)
Crescenta Valley (18-8, 10-4)
Burbank (18-8, 7-6)
Burroughs (13-12, 5-8)
Arcadia (11-15, 4-10)
Glendale (11-15, 3-10)
Hoover (7-18, 1-12)
