In the history of Pasadena City College women’s basketball, sophomore center Kailyn Gideon reigns supreme in the world of blocking shots. Gideon blocked eight more shots Wednesday to up her state-leading total to 98, far and away a PCC school record for one season in rejections.
The 6-foot-3 Gideon has 31 more blocks than any other player in the state and is averaging 3.8 per game. The previous high for a season at PCC is Ellen Rice who had 78 blocks in 28 games in 1997-98. Gideon’s career numbers are up to 149, which is also easily a school record.
Gideon’s latest shot-blocking exhibition was only a side note for the state No. 17-ranked Lancers, who were beaten by No. 2 Mt. San Antonio, 73-56, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. It was the third time this season that the Mounties (24-2, 6-1 in the South Coast Coast Conference North Division) beat the Lancers, who dropped to 18-8 and a modest 2-5 in the state’s most powerful league.
Against Mt. SAC, the only Lancer to reach double figures in scoring was frosh center Alisa Shinn, who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ilianna Blanc was limited to nine points while Jelissa Puckett had eight points and five assists. Gideon scored six points and grabbed eight boards.
Caira Benton led five Mounties in double digits scoring with 20 points as he was 9-for-11 from the field. She also paced her team’s swarming defense with four steals.
The Lancers will try to get back into the conference win column on Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to face Chaffey College. Tip-off is 7 p.m. following the men’s contest.
