Poly did so many things well this season.
The Panthers knocked off Flintridge Prep to win the Prep League championship.
They overcame slow starts throughout the season to win 79-percent of their games.
But on Tuesday, in Los Angeles, Poly picked a bad time to have its second worst offensive output of the year.
The Panthers fell at Shalhevet, 54-31, after scoring just 17 points in the final three quarters combined.
Senior John Genske has done everything this season (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots) and he finished his last game as the only Panther with double figures when he ended up with 13 points.
Genske, though, only had 2 rebounds and 2 steals, which (rebounds) are well below his season average.
Brendan Fong had 6 points and Ryan Bowen added 5, but did so on 2 of 11 shooting.
Bowen, being the class kid that he is, answered for his play.
“I just didn’t play well or up to the standards my team expects of me,” Bowen said. “I’ve had so much fun with our boys from the beginning of our work (outs), through the summer and even through tonight.”
Poly was just 28 percent from the field on 7-of-25 shooting.
The Panthers lowest scoring night of the season came in a December 10 loss to Holy Martyrs, 45-29.
Their point guard, the consistent Jackson Hayes, didn’t even score on 0 of 5 shooting, but Hayes has been solid all season on the football field and basketball court, and he’ll be back for a senior year.
When the pain of not playing up to their potential wears off, this Panthers team can be proud that it won more games of any Poly hoops team since the 2010-11 season, and that it went out as Prep League champions.
