With no regulation-size outfield fence at Glendale Sports Complex, the Pasadena City College softball team found the spacious field to its liking. The Lancers circled the bases with three triples as part of their offense and won their fourth in a row, 6-3, over Glendale on Wednesday afternoon.
PCC (7-5) led 1-0 on centerfielder Angel Urbina’s RBI single in the third inning. In the fifth, the Lancers batted around, scoring five runs. The big blow was a monster drive to deep center by first baseman Bree Howard, who has both of the team’s home runs this year, that resulted in a 2-run triple. The hit likely would have cleared most softball fences.
Catcher Grace Sinisterra led off the fifth with a triple to right center. In the fourth, leftfielder Jazmine Cabrera lined a triple down the left field line. The Lancers had only four triples in their first 11 games and nearly doubled that total by the end of this non-conference victory.
Overall, shortstop Karina Moreno, Urbina, and Sinisterra each collected two hits as part of PCC’s 10-hit attack.
PCC winning pitcher Pica Madrid (3-2) had a shutout going against Glendale (1-5 record) until the sixth when Mabel Calderon belted a 3-run homer to deep center that cut a 6-0 lead in half at that point. Madrid allowed only that blemish (5.2 innings, 6 hits, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts) and reliever Celina Mesa retired the last four batters for her first save.
On Thursday, Mar. 2, Coach Monica Tantlinger’s Lancers travel to face El Camino College in a 3 p.m. game. PCC hosts a 3-way tourney on Sunday, Mar. 5. The Lancers play Santa Barbara City College in an 11 a.m. game, followed by the SBCC Vaqueros playing Southwestern at 1 p.m. and then PCC taking on the SWC Jaguars at 3 p.m. All games are played at PCC’s off-campus diamond–Robinson Park.
