Freshmen Samuel Jo and Sydney Odent both won three events as the Pasadena City College men’s swim team split the South Coast Conference-opening double dual meet held at the Aquatic Center Friday. The Lancers crushed LA Trade Tech, 207-36 and lost a fairly close meet v. Mt. San Antonio, 154-124.
Jo was King of the freestyle as he won the 100-yard sprint (48.50), the 200 (1:44.94) and the 500 (4:55.69). Odent was equally impressive as he swam to event victories in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.40), the 200 breaststroke (2:14.96) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.25). The Lancers collected eight event wins overall with a first place from Jayson Wilia in the 200 butterfly (2:06.31) and the team’s 200 medley relay victory (1:41.20, David Jimenez, Odent, Wilia and Zachary Loomer).
The event of the day for the Lancers was the 200 butterfly as Wilia was followed to the wall by fellow Lancers in Narek Yeghikyan (2:11.05, second place) and Leo Nuntapramote (2:12.90, third place).
PCC had plenty of second place scores. Wilia was just .74 of a second behind Mt. SAC’s Alex Neoh in the 100 butterfly. Jimenez, last year’s conference champion in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, was right behind the Mounties’ Kyle Chang in the 100 (56.46 to 56.09). Cameron Sauve swam a swift 10:46.31 to place behind 1,000 freestyle winner Spencer Chlebowksi (Mt. SAC, 10:41.13). Loomer, a sophomore, took second in the 50 freestyle (22.50) and was a respectable third in the 100 freestyle (50.06). Wilia swam third in the 200 backstroke (2:05.36) as did Yeghikyan in the 1,000 freestyle (10:59.16).
The Lancers also took second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.71 (Loomer, Nuntampramote, Jo, and Jimenez).
“Mt. SAC was the defending dual champion in the SCC, and we really went stroke for stroke with them,” said a pleased PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. “The Mounties beat us mostly because they picked up top three place points in diving and we do not have a diver. We swam about as well as we could for a first dual.”
PCC makes its annual trip to Northern California this weekend. The Lancers will participate in a dual meet at Diablo Valley College on Friday, Mar. 10 and then take part in the Mariner Invitational at College of Marin on Saturday, Mar. 11.
