From Staff Reports
Matt Loomis had his good stuff going Wednesday afternoon.
The Poly junior went the distance, allowing just two earned runs, and the Panthers held off visiting Providence, 3-2, in a nonleague game.
Loomis gave up four hits, walked three and struck out 10 to pick up the win.
He improved his record to 4-1 on the mound.
Part of his success came because of his 18 first-pitch strikes.
Joe Masters went 1 for 3, scored a run and drove in another.
Jack Wilson also had a base hit and an RBI.
Franco Alonso was 2 for 2, including a run scored.
Ryan Clayton didn’t have a hit, but he did drive in a run for the Panthers (6-5).
Adrian Ramirez and Matthew Meza had the two RBIs for Providence (2-4).
Quotable:
Poly pitcher Matt Loomis: “Coming into the game, I knew I was going to be sharper with my pitches because I was on 5 days rest, which is longer than usual. Early on in the game, I was struggling to command the curve, but around the third inning, I found the command and starting getting strikeouts with it.
The whole game I felt like my fastball was working for me. My fastball location and velocity was on point from the first inning. As a team, I thought we played really well. Providence is a good team and we were able to come out on top. I am really proud of our team and the direction we are headed in.”
Box Score:
