In a match-up of Olympic League unbeatens, with both teams coming into the match with impressive strings of wins, this contest was for the league lead. MHS swept last year’s head-to-head contests, but two of them were 9-9 and were determined by games.
The Minutemen got out to an early lead, finishing the first round of play, 5-1. #1 singles, Matt Alleman, got his stiffest test of the year, narrowly winning a hard-fought set against Valley’s #1, Caleb Soto, 6-4. #2 singles, Bryan Lin, and #3 singles, Jake Scott, both had convincing 6-0 wins, while #1 doubles, Drew Sierra/Billy Tan, and #2 doubles, Matt Leiva/Michael Mathews both had convincing opening sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Riding strong momentum into the second round, MHS blanked the Crusaders, 6-0, securing the Minutemen a victory, 11-1, before finishing with a 15-3 final score. Sweeps were in order for Alleman, Lin, Sierra/Tan, and Leiva/Mathews, while Scott won 2 and #3 doubles, Tony Gao/Billy Sun won 1.
The Minutemen (5-1, 2-0 in league) next play Fairmont Prep on Tuesday in La Habra.
