From Staff Reports
Poly is certainly happy to have pitcher Matt Queen back in their rotation.
The junior hadn’t been on the mound for a couple weeks before his strong effort against La Salle last Thursday.
Queen made his second start (since his return) on Tuesday and he was nothing short of dominating.
He allowed just four hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 10 to lead the Panthers to an 8-0 victory at Rio Hondo Prep.
Queen also drove in a run with a sac fly to help his own cause.
Franco Alonso had two hits (including a double), scored once and drove in two runs.
Ty Evans, Ben Bryson, Jackson Hayes and Trent Steele all had single RBIs for Poly.
Evan Foor got the loss after allowing two first-inning runs on three hits and a walk.
Queen held the heart of the Kares’ lineup (leadoff through clean up hitter) to 3 of 14 with 6 strikeouts.
Poly will host Rio Hondo Prep on Thursday at 3:45 to finish off the two-game series with the Kares this week.
Quotable:
Poly pitcher Matt Queen: “I felt like I had more control of my fast ball and that was nice to see. I also felt like my curve was working again and it was just a good outing. The coaching change has allowed us to turn the page and focus on league play. Coach Beerman has changed the culture and our practices are much more in depth. He talks a lot and communicates with us. After we got the lead, I just went out there and kept throwing strikes.”
