The name “Poly” and “last place” don’t go together.
But that was the situation for the boys volleyball program heading into the week.
The Panthers, though, changed all of that with a victory over Firebaugh on Wednesday and 24 hours later, Poly swept Chadwick.
They jumped Chadwick, Rio Hondo Prep and Firebaugh in the standings after today’s 25-19, 25-15 and 25-17 victory.
Matt Alison led Poly with 9 kills.
Graham Olson had 5 kills and 5 blocks.
Will McConnell added 25 assists, 3 digs and 3 blocks.
The Panthers improved to 6-9 overall, and 2-2 in Prep League play.
Poly will host Bosco Tech on Tuesday at 4.

Poly senior Matt Alison: “We just try to get better every game and every practice, and recently we have played our best volleyball of the season. We are becoming more comfortable with each other on the court and our results have improved. My role is to be vocal on the court and help us keep our shape defensively. At middle back I try to dig the other teams attacks and scoop up any free balls or misplaced passes. In the front row i am aggressive with my attacks and push the other teams defense.
Poly senior Will McConnell: “I think as a team we’ve really started to cover, and as a result we’re getting great passes that allow us to run our offense more effectively. Our blockers are setting up strong blocks a lot more consistently.
