You’d think it would be difficult for a team to stay sharp when they’ve only played twice in the last two weeks.
But Maranatha has now won 11 in a row after Saturday’s 5-2 victory over Providence.
Trevor Marrs picked up the win, going five strong and allowing just one run.
Marrs allowed the run on two hits, and he struck out five.
Charles Acker walked, singled, doubled and had an RBI.
Eddie Lopez had a sac fly.
Dante Campione had an RBI single that tied the game up at 1-1.
It was the first time Maranatha had given up a run in the first inning all season.
Marco Martinez went 1 for 2, walked twice and drove in a run.
Max Blessinger had just one hit, which is rare for the sophomore star, but he upped his stolen base total to 23, which is just 13 shy of the school record.
After two consecutive weeks of only playing Saturday games, Maranatha will finally get back to it full time this week.
The Minutemen leave Tuesday for San Luis Obispo, where they’ll play four games starting on Wednesday.
Maranatha will open tournament play with Enochs of Modesto, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Quotable:
Maranatha coach Matt Shupper: “We were a little rusty, but Dante Campione got us started with an RBI base hit and we kind of took off from there. Trevor pitched well and we got some timely hits. We’re looking forward to this tournament to help us get ready for (the resumption) league play next week.”
Maranatha pitcher Trevor Marrs: “I felt like I did a pretty good job today on the mound. I had a couple mistakes in the first inning by leaving the ball too high, which led to a triple and the only run. I throw a lot of strikes and just let my defense go to work behind me. I trust every single one of them that they will do their job. The team played great behind me, but we were off to a slow start on offense until about the third inning, when we got a couple of runs. Overall, the team played great as we keep on taking it one game at a time. I do not believe we have been affected that much by only playing once a week for the last two weeks. We have been playing intrasquad games each week to keep us ready. and taking live at-bats against our pitchers.”
Maranatha outfielder Dante Campione: “I’ve been seeing the ball a lot better and I feel really comfortable at the plate. Lately, I’ve been working with our hitting coach, Al Quintana, and he’s a big part of my success. Our pitching has been lights out, and our hitters keep putting runs on the board. We’re used to playing 2-3 times a week, so when we play once a week we seem to come out a little flat, but we always get the job done. We’re gonna keep winning games and hopefully we stay hot going into our tournament next week. We have a great group of guys, and I’m looking forward to the rest of our season.”
