La Salle is getting some much needed wins and momentum heading into the final stretch in league play.
The Lancers are 3-1 in the St. Paul Tournament after Tuesday’s 9-1 victory over Banning at Cerritos Valley Christian.
Grant Fosselman went six strong innings and allowed just a first-inning run.
Fosselman walked two and struck out five on 85 pitches over six innings to get the win.
Ethan Patrick had two more hits (both doubles) and scored a run.
Sammy Martinez had two hits, including a two-run double.
Brennan Mace connected on his first home run of the season when he went deep over the center field fence.
Mace’s blast was a three-run shot.
But the player that everyone is talking about is Luke Heiberg.
The freshman was brought up a few weeks ago and is mashing the ball.
Heibert had two hits, scored a run and drove in another on Tuesday night.
La Salle will face San Pedro today (Wednesday) at 3:30 at Downey High School as St. Paul Tournament play continues.
Noah Zate had an RBI single and scored a run in the 8-run third inning.
Spencer Ezell got the loss for Banning after allowing five runs on five hits over just two innings.
Justin Zuniga had one hit and scored twice.
Zane Lindeman and Steven Froio both had hits for La Salle and Froio scored a run.
James Barnard threw a perfect seventh inning to close out Banning.
Quotable:
La Salle coach Mike Parisi: “This was the best game we played all year, all the way around. Offensively, defense and pitching. We had some great at-bats today and they were fun to be around.”
La Salle pitcher Grant Fosselman: “I had to get my mentality back. I hit my spots. I think we’re playing a little looser.”
La Salle DH Sammy Martinez: “I felt pretty solid today at the plate. We all did. We need to get these wins and get some momentum as we go into the second half of league.”
La Salle catcher Brennan Mace: “It was great to get a hold of one. I have had some ups and downs on and off the field. I hope we come closer as a team and bond more and play more consistent.”
La Salle shortstop Ethan Patrick: “We’re playing a lot better as a team. Everybody is working hard and we’re playing much better defense. We need to keep going up. We can’t be a bipolar team. We have to play hard. I have to be a good leadoff hitter and play stable defense.”
