If this past week is any indication, St. Francis could make things difficult for their Mission League foes.
Heading into the St. Paul Tournament, the Golden Knights had just three wins and were on a five-game losing streak.
To make matters worse, they had scored just one run total in those five losses combined.
But they broke out in a big way with three wins in four games, including Wednesday night’s 7-3 victory over Long Beach Poly at Cerritos Valley Christian High School.
The game may have started late, but the Golden Knights bats did not.
Niko Khoury’s three-run double in the first inning was the big blow off Poly starter Patrick Faynor.
Khoury’s 2-out hit set the tone for the rest of the game for the Golden Knights offense.
Faynor went five innings and allowed the four runs (all in the first inning).
Aaron Treloar went the first three innings for St. Francis and allowed two runs on three hits.
Treloar walked two and struck out six batters to earn the victory.
Brandon Lewis had a couple rough at-bats early, but the Golden Knights best hitter came through with a 2-run double in the sixth inning to put the game away, and made two solid catches in center field.
Evan Tontini picked up the duties on the mound in the fourth inning and went three scoreless.
Tontini did not allow a run, or a hit and struck out four.
Ryan DeVore closed the game out, but allowed one run on two hits.
Christian Muro had one hit, scored twice and drove in a run.
Jacob Bechtold also had a base hit and scored a run.
St. Francis went from three wins on the season to six this week after tournament wins over Serra, Banning and Long Beach Poly.
Alemany and St. Francis will battle three times next week as Mission League play resumes.
Quotable:
St. Francis infielder Niko Khoury: “We played great. We connected with each other and scored some runs. They don’t know what’s coming at them.”
St. Francis center fielder Brandon Lewis: “The team played well this tournament. We learned a lot about ourselves and we’re looking to get back into league play.”
St. Francis pitcher Aaron Treloar: “We broke out of a slump in the first game against Serra and that momentum carried us throughout the tournament. I hadn’t been pitching that much and I felt my momentum was good and my slide and curve ball was good.”
St. Francis coach Aaron Dorlarque: “We got some clutch and timely hits tonight. Aaron’s command was an issue, so we modified his mechanics. He has a tremendous arm and make up. He impressed.”
Box Score:
