In the Olympic league tournament at Biola University, the Maranatha Minutemen took home both the singles and doubles titles. It was the second consecutive year that Maranatha was able to achieve this feat.
Olympic League MVP Matt Alleman dominated in winning another title, winning 6-0, 6-2 in the final against Tarbut V Torah’s, Ethan Abelowitz. Alleman defeated Valley Christian’s #1, Caleb Soto, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinal. Abelowitz bested Maranatha’s #3 and #2 singles players, Daniel Guan and Bryan Lin, in the previous two rounds. Lin placed fourth after falling to Soto in the consolation match.
Doubles MVPs Drew Sierra and Billy Tan took the doubles title in impressive fashion, dropping just seven games in three matches. The dynamic duo romped in the final 6-0, 6-1 against Valley Christian’s Justin Sandoz and Matt Weaver. In the semifinal, Sierra and Tan eliminated another Valley Christian team, Peter Weaver and Jimmy Jin, 6-3, 6-2.
In the Third Place match, Maranatha’s Matthew Leiva and Michael Mathews tallied a come from behind win against Weaver and Jin. With the victory, Leiva and Mathews become the Olympic League alternates in the individual CIF tournament at the end of the month.
