From Staff Reports

Zane Lindeman has pitched himself into the title of ‘team ace.”

Lindeman already has a no-hitter to his credit this season, but you could easily make the case that Friday’s win over league foe Bishop Amat was even bigger.

La Salle went into Friday’s game 0-2 in their first two of three games with Del Rey League power Bishop Amat.

Back on March 28, Bishop Amat rallied late at home, and overcame a 5-1 lead to send La Salle home angry and devastated.

It looked like Amat was going to sweep La Salle, as they took a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning.

Blake Archuleta got the first out of the seventh via strikeout.

But Brennan Mace and Zane Lindeman singled.

Ethan Patrick then drove in Mace with a single to left and tied the game at 1-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, Sammy Martinez drew a one-out walk.

After he took ball four, the ball went to the backstop, but Amat apparently thought it was ball three, because the pitcher asked for another ball and the umpire backed away because he knew the play was still live.

Martinez got to first and was implored by first-base coach Rich Witherspoon to sprint down to second base as the Amat players were still confused.

Martinez slid in safely to second and then moved to third base on a passed ball.

With one out, Justin Zuniga hit a sacrifice fly and it scored Martinez for what turned out to be the winning run.

Lindeman came out for his eighth frame, and got two ground outs and a strikeout to end Amat’s perfect run in Del Rey League play.

Lindeman went all eight innings (and 90 pitches) to get the win, and allowed four hits and one run.

The junior right-hander walked three (one was intentional) and struck out 8 Amat batters.

Ethan Patrick went 3 for 4, with a single, double, triple and the huge RBI in the seventh inning.

Victor Scalzo went 2 for 2 for La Salle.

Ben Hurst had Amat’s only RBI on Friday.

Quotable:

La Salle coach Mike Parisi: “Zane was outstanding today, he has no fear, great competitor. The team always feels like they have a chance to win when he takes the mound.”

La Salle pitcher Zane Lindeman: “It was an awesome win today. It’s always great to beat a good team like Bishop Amat. I am proud of my guys. Justin and Ethan had big at-bats, Sammy’s hustle got him to second on a walk and Brennan caught a great game.”

La Salle infielder Justin Zuniga: “That was a very exciting and hard-fought win. We had a lot of opportunities we couldn’t capitalize on earlier in the game, but it’s a testimony to everything this team has been through. Our fighting through adversity and having the ability to flush previous failures and focus on the task at hand as a team has helped us as individuals. I could not get my job done my previous three at bats, but was able to focus on the moment at hand and was able to get a pitch to elevate and get that run in.”

La Salle shortstop Ethan Patrick: “It was a very big win for us today, everyone contributed some way or another. Our ace, Zane, got the job done as usual. He really helped give us all the momentum we needed to win the game. This win is a huge confidence booster going into next week against Cathedral and into playoffs.”
