From Staff Reports
Poly told everybody that would listen that Malibu’s 12-14 record was not indicative of the Sharks team.
They said Malibu had played an incredibly strong schedule and were a very tough out.
They were right.
Malibu’s William Tamkin threw a shutout and struck out 8 to lead Malibu to a 3-0 victory in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.
Poly out-hit Malibu, 6-4, and the Sharks scored just two earned runs, but the bottom line is always the scoreboard.
Matt Loomis got the loss, despite allowing two runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Loomis allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three.
Matt Queen went the final 1 2/3 innings for Poly. He allowed an unearned run on no hits, but walked three.
Queen had two more hits Tuesday and guaranteed his spot at the top of the Pasadena-La Canada area leaderboard for batting average.
He is the only player north of .500, and he was 5-0 on the mound this season on the mound.
Loomis also had a great season, and finished 10-3 on the mound, which is also an area best.
Tamkin helped his own cause with the game’s lone RBI.
The season may be over, but it was a big success.
After a brutal 2016 season and a slow start to 2017, Poly made a coaching change and earned its 21st Prep League title in the last 22 years.
Best yet, the Panthers have almost the entire core to this year’s title team coming back n 2018.
