Three area powers will represent Pasadena starting today in the Tarkanian Classic.
Pasadena, Muir and Maranatha have first-round games Wednesday in a tournament that has not only California powers, but programs throughout the U.S.
PHS (3-1) has waited 18 days to get that sour taste out of their mouth that Oak Park left in the Maranatha Tournament final back on December 2.
The Bulldogs, the area’s best and most talented program, will meet up with Clark (Nevada) at 3 at the Orleans (Arena) Hotel.
Bryce Hamilton and Darius Brown II lead Pasadena in the “Platinum Bracket,” and with a win, the Bulldogs would face the winner of the Westchester (California)-Westbury Christian(Texas) on Thursday at Bishop Gorman High School at 4:30.
Muir (2-2) will compete in the “Orleans Bracket” and the Mustangs will go head-to-head with Prestonwood, Texas, tonight at 7:40 at Bishop Gorman High.
Muir has also not played since December 2, when they fell, 69-65, in the final round of the Maranatha Tournament.
As always, the Mustangs will be led by Hunter Woods and Tiyon Martin.
With a win, Muir will face the Chaparral (Colorado)-Camarillo (Califonia) winner on Thursday at 7:10 at Bishop Gorman.
Maranatha (3-2), also in the “Orleans Bracket, will see Coronado of Nevada at 7:10 at Bishop Gorman.
The Minutemen have had 8 days off since their 78-70 win over Culver City back on December 12.
If MHS is able to earn a first-round victory, they would take on the Southwind (Tennessee)- East (Utah) victor on Thursday evening at 5:50 at Bishop Gorman.
The prestigious tournament runs Wednesday-Saturday, and is named after Hall of Fame UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 84.
Tarkanian led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 1990 NCAA championship and followed that up with 34 consecutive wins to begin the 1991 season.
That was until they were upset in the national semifinal against eventual champion Duke.
Tarkanian had a stellar reputation of giving troubled young men a second and in some cases a third chance when others wouldn’t, and he is beloved for that compassion he displayed throughout his iconic career.
