From Staff Reports:

According to MaxPreps, Rancho Cucamonga is 121 places higher in the California state rankings than Muir.

The Cougars entered Friday’s showdown at the Damien Classic with the Mustangs at 13-1.

Muir didn’t read or listen to the hype and through three quarters of play, the Mustangs and Cougars were locked in a 2-point battle (50-48 Muir).

But the Mustangs outscored Rancho Cucamonga, 34-20, in the decisive fourth quarter and earned an impressive 84-68 victory to improve to 7-4, and earned a spot in the Silver Division finals against Bonita at 4 p.m. Saturday at Damien.

Hunter Woods came to play.

The 6-foot-6 senior scored 23 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed 9 rebounds in the win.

Haleem Jenkins was also really strong, with 18 points and 3 rebounds.

But that wasn’t it.

In all, 5 different Muir players scored in double digits in an incredibly balanced effort on Friday.

Tiyon Martin finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Simaine Stewart Jr. added 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Nick Moore was also outstanding with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Quotable:

Muir coach Simaine Stewart: “We are growing as a basketball team. The guys are buying in. Hunter was turning the ball over too much early in the year, but his all around game is coming together. He’s more than just a shooter. We have a goal as a team. Everybody in the city went to a championship but us (PHS, Blair, Maranatha) last year, and that hurt. We’re much better than that. Our guard play is really starting to come together as Tiyon and Simaine work together well and are playing good basketball.”

Muir senior Hunter Woods: “I think that everyone played as a team tonight. It also helped that we were hitting our shots. We had good ball movement, so that allowed us to get easy open looks. I also think we played good help defense as well.”

Box Score:
Muir: 16-16-18-34-(84)
RC: 15-16-17-20-(68)

Records:
Muir (7-4); Rancho Cucamonga (13-2)Muir Bo
