From STAFF REPORTS

After sweeping Mayfield, the Prep League girls volleyball race is essentially now a fight to the finish between first place Westridge and second place Poly.

The Prep League’s best two teams will meet on October 23 at Poly for what will likely be a co-championship if the Panthers hold serve at home, or the Tigers can win their first outright league title in over 10 years if they’re able to pick up the season sweep over Poly.

Last season, Westridge and Chadwick shared the Prep League championship.

Back to Thursday, the Panthers put distance between themselves and any other challenger when they swept the Cubs.

Poly earned a 25-23, 25-13 and 25-18 victory.

Ellla Mao had 11 kills and Alexis Pappachan added 8 kills and 4 aces.

Zoey Mao finished with 28 assists.

Annie Evans had 6 kills and 10 digs for Mayfield.

Maddie Reed added 8 kills.

Catie Sanchez and Olivia Smith had 4 kills each for Mayfield.

Quotable:

Poly coach Steve Beerman: “It was a good week for us with a road win over Chadwick while beating Mayfield at home. I thought we played with rhythm and tempo as the match progressed. The girls played with confidence and played to win. Mayfield has an excellent program, so it’s always nice to get by them.”
