This was the first match of the second round of Olympic League play for the Lady Minutemen. Having lost to Maranatha, 4-14, the last time they played, the Crusaders changed up their line-up, moving two of their singles players into doubles, hoping to pick up more points. That, plus an injury MHS’s doubles starter, Rose Zhang, that would keep her out of the match, gave the Crusaders a slim glimmer of hope. That hope was quelled quickly as the Lady Minutemen bolted out of the gates to a 5-1 lead. After the second round, the match was won, as Maranatha held a 10-2 lead, with a surprise win coming from #3 doubles. Seldom used Shuhan Yang, replacing Zhang, played with senior, Reagan Atallah, for the first time ever (in practice or in a match). After working out the kinks in their first set loss (2-6), Atallah/Yang stormed back to win their second set, 6-1. They were unable to duplicate the feat against Valley’s #1 doubles in the third round, 3-6..

Notables:

#1 doubles, Maddie Hernandez and Michael Wilkins, remained the league’s only undefeated team, sweeping 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and running their league record to 12-0. They are on track to be the top seed in the league tourney at the end of the league season.

#1 singles, Angela Hsieh, recorded her third “triple bagel” this season and the 15th of her illustrious career, sweeping 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Hsieh also recorded her first Golden Set, not losing a single point in her final set of the day. She is undefeated in league thus far, going 12-0.

#2 singles, Malena Smith, also swept her competition, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to remain undefeated in league as well. Hsieh and Smith are looking poised to be the top 2 seeds in the league tourney.

#3 singles, Aria Haver-Hill, posted two wins, going 1-6, 6-0, 6-0.

#2 doubles, Hellen Hong and Stella Wang, entered today’s match undefeated and tied with Hernandez and Wilkins for the league lead. They stumbled today, however, dropping 2 of 3 sets, going 2-6, 6-2, 2-6.

Now 4-0 in league and 6-4 overall, MHS heads to play Whittier Christian on Thursday at the La Mirada Tennis Center.
