Junior center Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) found herself at the center of another dominant Caltech fourth quarter in Wednesday’s women’s basketball game against visiting Ottawa University.

Eiden put together one of the Beavers’ strongest lines of the game, scoring 17 points to go with eight rebounds, two blocks and two assists. The center teamed with sophomore guard Samantha D’Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis), who put together a similar line with 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists and led a fourth quarter comeback that saw the Beavers turn a 19-point deficit after three quarters into a competitive game late in the action. The two combined for 15 points in a fourth quarter in which the Beavers outscored the Spirit, 18-8. D’Costa had a particularly efficient 10 minutes on the glass, as six of her eight rebounds came during the span. Eiden succeeded, in part thanks to shooting 7-for-12 from the field in addition to going 3-for-3 from the free throw line.

Even in defeat, the Beavers once again succeeded in the turnover battle. Caltech committed 12 turnovers to Ottawa’s 22 and churned out 21 of its 51 points solely off the visiting team’s giveaways. Caltech’s 14 team assists helped keep the Beavers’ assist-turnover ratio above one for the season, and relentless on-ball defense forced the Spirit into making mistakes. In addition to D’Costa coming up with four steals, fellow sophomore guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) came up with five steals all on her own and added 13 points.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will take on another Arizona-based team, Embry-Riddle University on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m.
