With just three regular season games remaining in the Prep League, Mayfield is still in striking distance.
The Cubs could very well find themselves in second place before the CIF-SS playoffs behind.
But back to Thursday for a moment.
Mayfield defeated winless Firebaugh, 75-40, behind 40 combined points from sisters Sarah and Katie Tupy, and Marguerite Irie.
Sarah finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Katie had 12 points.
And Marguerite Irie had a solid effort with 14 points and 6 rebounds.
In terms of the big picture, Poly holds a one-game lead over Mayfield.
But the Panthers face first-place and undefeated Flintridge Prep on Saturday and Tuesday, and they go into both games as underdogs.
Mayfield won’t be back on the court until next Thursday when they host Rio Hondo Prep at 5.
The Cubs finish regular season play with a trip to Flintridge Prep a week from Friday at 5.
