From STAFF REPORTS

Two of the San Gabriel Valley’s best shortstops went face to face Tuesday at the Don Lugo Tournament in Chino.

La Salle shortstop Ethan Patrick will play his college ball at Loyola Marymount and the Lancers’ senior is hitting above the .500 mark.

Glendora shortstop Jacob Gonzalez is an early commit to Ole Miss, and the Tartans’ sophomore is batting just under .400, but Gonzalez is trending upwards with a bat in his hand, especially of late.

The two combined to go 7 for 7, but it was Glendora that out-slugged La Salle, and earned a 9-5 victory.

The Tartans out-hit the Lancers 15-7.

Jacob Gonzalez

Gonzalez went 4 for 4 with a triple, he scored once and drove in four runs.

GHS lit up La Salle’s Jeff Daley for six runs (five earned) on eight hits in just two innings.

Zane Lindeman went the first four innings for La Salle and the Tartans got three runs (none earned) on seven hits, but the Lancers’ senior ran out of pitches for the week and was removed.

Adam Armstrong got the win for Glendora, after going five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven.

Ethan Patrick

Patrick went 3 for 3, walked and scored once for La Salle.

Luke Heiberg went 1 for 3 with a walk and Johnathan Wong had an RBI double and scored a run for La Salle.

Zane Lindeman got an RBI on a safety squeeze and Donovan Bailey also had an RBI for the Lancers.

Glendora second baseman Bryce Woolridge, who also starred for the Tartans’ football program at quarterback, went 3 for 4 and scored three times.

Scott Ellis had a pair of hits in four at-bats for the Tartans and drove in a run.

Nine separate GHS batters had at least one hit on Tuesday.

La Salle will take on Los Altos on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The Conquerors surrendered four runs in the last two innings and fell to St. Francis, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

Glendora will face Moorpark on Thursday at 3.

Quotable:

Glendora coach Dan Henley: “We came off of a really good week where we beat South Hills and Bonita and we’re back at it. La Salle is a very good team and they’ve played a tough schedule. We knew we had a team that would be very competitive. (La Salle coach Eddie) McKiernan is a good, quality baseball guy and he’s going to do a fine job there. They pitched well early on, and they kept competing. Jacob Gonzalez is coming around. He’s had a lot of quality at-bats lately. He’s trying to be the best player on the field. You had two great shortstops out there today, and they both played really well.”

La Salle coach Eddie McKiernan: “Glendora is a good program and they made less mistakes than us. That’s the game of baseball. When good teams play each other, the team that makes less mistakes win.”

La Salle shortstop Ethan Patrick: “We had a lot of chances to score runs and overall we hit pretty well. What killed us was our defense. We made a lot of errors that cost us runs.”

Glendora shortstop Jacob Gonzalez: “I pretty much always go out there and try to be the best. If you’re not trying to be the best, why are you going out there? I started slow (offensively this season) but I’m finding my good swing again after practicing a lot. I’m seeing the ball better. It’s good to have people that play with a lot of heart and that want to win. I’d like to see us do well in this tournament and I think it will help our morale as we head back into league.”
