Maranatha is safe and sound in Florida, but they weren’t welcomed too kindly on Tuesday.
Monsignor Pace of Miami roughed up the Maranatha pitching staff for 14 hits, including six extra-base hits.
The Spartans knocked off the Minutemen, 7-1, in the first round of the IMG National Classic.
Yordani Carmona was the star of the game.
Carmona earned the victory on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits.
Carmona walked two and struck out 11 Maranatha batters.
He wasn’t done there, either.
Carmona also went 2 for 2 with a home run at the plate to help his cause.
Casey Popham went 2 1/3 innings for Maranatha, allowing five runs on nine hits.
JP Caire went three innings, and surrendered two runs on five hits.
Caire didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.
Will Downing went 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball for the Minutemen.
Max Blessinger had three of Maranatha’s six hits and he scored the lone run.
In the first inning, Blessinger doubled and was driven home by Marco Martinez.
Brock Vradenburg, Dante Campione and Nick Iverson each had one hit apiece for MHS.
Kenneth Gonzalez went the final 1 1/3 for the Spartans.
Carmona and Gonzalez teamed to strike out nine separate Maranatha batters at least once on Tuesday.
Maranatha will be back on the field today with an opponent and time to be announced.
Luis Gonzalez went 4 for 4, including a home run and a double.
He scored twice and had one RBI.
Michael MacHin had two hits and scored once.
Luis Tuero and Samuel Infante both had two hits apiece for Monsignor Pace.
