From STAFF REPORTS
If you hadn’t heard, Maranatha junior Dawson Netz is pretty good.
On Tuesday, the 6-foot-1 right hander threw his second no-hitter of the season.
This time, it was a five-inning no-hitter, because the Minutemen defeated Heritage Christian, 10-0, in a mercy-rule setback for the Warriors.
More importantly or at least more noteworthy, the five scoreless innings Tuesday pushed Netz’ current streak to 41, and that tally is believed to be just one shy of tying the CIF record for most innings in a row without surrendering a run.
If you’re thinking ahead like we are, Netz will go again next Tuesday night when the Minutemen host last place Cerritos Valley Christian at 6 at Brookside Park.
Back to Tuesday, though.
Netz got 12 of his 15 outs via strikeout and he walked just one over hisĀ 69-pitch outing.
Heritage Christian starter Alfredo Galacia didn’t quite have the same success as Netz.
He didn’t get one out and surrendered six runs on six hits and waked one before being yanked in the first inning.
Patrick Parraz replaced Galacia and allowed four runs over four innings on six hits.
Parraz walked five and struck out two.
Max Blessinger, Nick Iverson, Marco Martinez and Luke Watson had two hits apiece for MHS.
Martinez and Watson each collected two RBIs and Blessinger, Iverson and Martinez scored two runs apiece.
Martinez also walked twice for the Minutemen.
Ben Guess had one hit and drove in two runs.
Maranatha will play Wednesday against Bosco Tech and then have two more with Heritage Christian before this week is over.
Quotable:
Maranatha coach Matt Shupper: “Dawson pitched great tonight. He looked rested and relaxed out on the mound after a 10-day layoff. He had each pitch working and really keeps hitters off-balanced and guessing. The top of the lineup of Heritage had a lot of success this year and we knew they could hit. Dawson attacked them early and led to low-pitch innings.”
Box Score:
