From STAFF REPORTS

It’s incredible how much things can change in such a small period of time.

Heading into last Saturday’s game at Burbank, Pasadena was just a win away from having a two-game lead with four games to play for third place in the Pacific League.

That third spot in an automatic ticket punch to the CIF-SS playoffs, something Muir hasn’t done since a Californian named Reagan was in the White House.

Back to Saturday: PHS lost, 3-2, in eight innings, which allowed the Mustangs to pull within one game of the Bulldogs.

Today (Tuesday), PHS was easily handled by unbeaten Arcadia, and worse yet, their ace, Alvie Castro, was injured and went to the hospital to check out his foot after a foul ball made it nearly impossible for the PHS star senior to walk.

And on top of that, while Castro was at the hospital, Muir rode the strong arm of Valente Vera to a 2-1 win at the same field (Burbank) that Pasadena recently lost at.

The win means PHS and Muir are now tied for third with three games to play, and the news keeps getting better for the Mustangs.

They will have their ace, Brian Love on the mound on Friday against Andrew De La Torre, who struck out 13 Pasadena batters last Saturday.

And Pasadena is facing an unbeaten Chris Wilson on the mound from Arcadia on Thursday at 3:30, and unless Castro heals quickly, the Bulldogs will be without their ace for the first time all season.

In Tuesday’s victory for Muir, Valente Vera allowed just one run on five hits.

Vera walked two and struck out seven Burbank batters to earn the victory.

Emiliano Martinez went 2 for 3, including a double and scored one of the Mustangs’ two runs.

Amaris and Aryonis Harrison had one hit apiece, and David Solis had an RBI.

Kevin Torres walked and ended up scoring the other Muir run.

Muir will look for the sweep when they host Burbank on Friday at 3:30.
