Give Westridge, their coaches and players credit.
No one outside of that program and school gave the Tigers much of a chance of beating first place Mayfield on Thursday.
But as they say, ‘it’s why they play the game.’
Westridge entered the contest 2-7 in Prep League play, and they used 14 hits and three fifth inning runs that turned out to be the difference.
The Tigers not only upset Mayfield, 8-6, they added even more drama with the victory for the overall hierarchy of the Prep League championship.
With the loss, Mayfield now needs victories over both Firebaugh and Chadwick to ensure an outright Prep League championship.
But back to Thursday’s showdown.
Demi Oscar was in the circle for Westridge and she allowed six runs on 13 hits in the victory.
Oscar walked five and fanned three Cubs’ batters.
Mayfield’s Jaylin Domingo allowed 8 runs on 11 hits, but only two of those runs were earned.
Domingo walked six and struck out four in the loss.
IO Jette-Kouri went 4 for 5, including a double, an RBI and one run scored for Westridge.
Oscar helped her own cause by going 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Julia Valenzuela and Charlotte Koppelman had two hits each for the Tigers.
Ella Wood and Caroline Lopez had one hit each and both scored two runs for Westridge.
Julia Domingo had a monster game for Mayfield.
Domingo went 4 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Taylin Yankovich, Megan Moffat and Julia Watson had two hits apiece for the Cubs.
