The Caltech men’s cross country team will begin the season ranked sixth in the Division III West region according to preseason rankings courtesy of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The ranking is a four-spot improvement on the men’s team’s finish at last year’s NCAA West Regional Championships, where the Ben Raphelson-led Beavers picked up their best team finish since 1997, back when the region featured only nine teams. Needless to say, 2018 marks the men’s team’s highest preseason ranking of all time and if Caltech is able to match the ranking at this year’s regional race it will mark the best regional finish in program history. The Beavers are also ranked fourth among SCIAC teams, ranked only behind Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Occidental College in that order after mustering a sixth-place finish at last year’s SCIAC Championships.

Raphelson and the Beavers will kick off the season this weekend at the 6K Redlands Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 9 a.m.
