Sophomore Andy Rothstein (Potomac, Md. / Winston Churchill) and freshman Timothy Yao (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) of the Caltech men’s swimming and diving team represented the Beavers at the 2018 Collegiate Winter Invitational, hosted by the University of La Verne over the weekend.

The duo, standouts at the team’s opening meet at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in November, started the weekend strong by each making Saturday’s finals. Rothstein 54.83 in the 100 Back to claim third place and a 1:50.23 in the 200 Free preliminaries, where his freshman teammate Yao came out on top. Yao swam a 1:45.92 to defeat swimmers from the University of Redlands, Chapman University and La Verne. Yao then took second-place in the event’s finals while bettering his time by a few tenths of a second. Yao turned around the next day to finish second in the 100 Free prelims before taking third in the finals while bettering his time to a 47.44, putting him less than a second off the winning time.

Head Coach Andy Brabson and the Beavers will return to the pool next year when they travel to the University of Redlands to meet the Bulldogs, in addition to Chapman on Jan. 12.
