From Staff Reports

Hayden Byrnes allowed just two runs over six strong innings for St. Francis on Wednesday in the second of a three-game series with Chaminade.

Byrnes surrounded four hits and struck out four batters.

But St. Francis’ offense went dormant and the Golden Knights fell, 2-0, at Chaminade in a Mission League pitcher’s duel.

John Politis and Brandon Lewis had the only two hits of the game for St. Francis.

The Golden Knights (3-9 overall, 3-2 in league) left eight runners on base, and it was the sixth inning that proved to be most frustrating.

St. Francis was trailing just 1-0 and had the bases loaded and no outs, but they were unable to push a run across.

Chaminade and St. Francis will meet in the rubber match Friday at 3:30 at the Glendale Sports Complex .

Patrick Collins went six scoreless for Chaminade and Tyler Uberstine picked up the save.

“Starting pitcher Hayden Byrnes pitched well enough to win today. He only gave up four hits and two earned runs against a very good Chaminade team,” St. Francis coach Aaron Dorlarque said. “After a big win on Monday, I thought we came out a little flat today. Our pitching and defense kept us in it, but our offense struggled to deliver in the big moments.”

Quotable:

St. Francis pitcher Hayden Byrnes: “Today at the plate, both my teammates and I failed to take advantage of the runners we had in scoring position. It was a team loss. Even though I did my job as a pitcher, I still made mistakes and can improve.”
