Poly didn’t just sweep Flintridge Prep this season, they did so with a giant exclamation mark.
After Friday night’s 13-4 victory, the Panthers earned a three-game sweep this season by a combined score of 35-13.
Matt Queen and Franco Alonso combined to keep Prep at bay, and the Panthers offense pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of three Rebels’ errors.
Matt Queen started and went the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits.
Queen walked five and struck out eight Prep batters.
Franco Alonso went the final 2 1/3 innings, walked two, but didn’t give up a run or a hit and picked up the win.
Van Fichtner had two hits and drove in three runs for Poly.
Ty Evans had three more hits on Friday, and scored three times and drove in two runs.
Evans had a grand slam in Tuesday’s victory over the Rebels.
Queen helped his own cause with three hits, including a double.
He scored twice and had two RBIs.
Franco Alonso tripled and scored for the Panthers.
Kendall Kikkawa and Jack Enziminger had one RBI apiece for Prep, as the other two Rebels’ runs were unearned.
Nick Davis went the first 3 2/3 innings, and he allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four.
Aiden Schrader was saddled with the loss, after giving up two runs (none earned) on one hit.
Bradley Noble had a rough time, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks over just 1/3 of an inning.
Max Rosenfeld went the final two innings for Prep, and allowed four runs, but only one was earned.
Poly will host Chadwick on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Prep will host Rio Hondo Prep next Friday at 3:30 at the Glendale Sports Complex.
Quotable:
Poly pitcher Franco Alonso: “It was a great team win. We started off strong, thanks to a great outing by Matt Queen. Then we struggled through some adversity and Prep was able to come back and tie the game. I am glad I was able to come in and close it for us. I am also proud of how our team was able to keep fighting and that we were able to secure the sweep against Prep, our rivals.”
Poly pitcher Matt Queen: “This was a solid week for the team. We went out on Tuesday and, despite struggling early, came back to dominate Prep behind a solid start from Loomis. In tonight’s game, it was also close in the beginning. The wind was blowing all over the place and messing with my timing, but nonetheless, I struggled in the 5th. We had a big inning in the 6th and took a solid lead which was plenty of cushion behind Alonso’s 2.1 scoreless innings.”
