From Staff Reports

Charles Acker has been exceptional this year on the mound.

And while he pitched well enough on Tuesday to earn the win, Ackler walked seven batters.

He allowed just one hit over 4 1/3 innings, and only one of the two runs he surrendered was earned.

Acker struck out seven Crusaders’ batters in leading Maranatha to a 7-2 Olympic League victory at Valley Christian.

Evan Chang and Dawson Netz each went 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

They allowed just one hit (off Chang), walked one and struck out one.

Offensively, Eddie Lopez continues to lead the way.

Lopez had three more hits and two RBIs on Tuesday to up his average to a team-best .536.

Marco Martinez also had two hits and he too drove in two runs.

Dante Campione went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and he scored two runs.

Ben Guess added two hits and an RBI.

Maranatha will host Valley Christian on Thursday night at 6 at Brookside Park.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach Matt Shupper: “Facing a pitcher like Brett Garcia and an extremely well coached team like Valley Christian is tough. These are the type of games that you have to stick to your offensive approach. We wanted to get guys on base and run, we needed to put pressure on Brett. Once the 4th inning hit, we did just that and we were able to take advantage of a couple small mistakes. I am proud of my guys intensity for 7 complete innings and a desire to not be defeated. The pitchers need to throw more strikes and force hitters to make contact. We have a spectacular defense and we need to improve that aspect of our game quickly. Charles Acker did a great job pitching out of trouble and making guys swing and miss, he wasn’t his best but he battled hard and came away with another win.”
