Every time you think St. Francis might have fought its last fight and when things are not going their way, the Golden Knights rise up and show a strong and beating heart.

Wednesday’s Mission League battle with Loyola was no different.

Loyola led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning and St. Francis rallied for seven fifth-inning runs and beat the Cubs, 8-7.

It was their first victory over their Mission League rivals since 2011.

Christian Muro started the rally with two out and nobody on.

Muro singled to center, and Jacob Bectold drove Muro home with a single.

Brandon Lewis had an RBI triple and Aaron Treloar drove in a run with a double.

Niko Khoury and Tyler Quintero both had RBI singles and John Politis’ two-run single capped the huge inning.

Loyola scored one run in the sixth, but Aaron Treloar got out of the jam by striking out a Loyola batter with the bases loaded.

JP Caire earned the save by getting the final two outs with the potential tying run on first base.

Brandon Lewis went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and he drove in a run with his triple to right field.

Sophomore Tyler Quintero got the win after going two innings and allowing one run.

Colin Livingston went 1 for 4 with two RBIs for Loyola.

Stephen Burke and Jake Mallory each had a hit and an RBI for the Cubs.

The Golden Knights got to Tiger Adams and Stephen Burke for the 8 runs on 5 hits.

Neither Chuck Nelson or Patrick Hubbs allowed a Golden Knights run in their combined two innings pitched for Loyola.

St. Francis will travel to Los Angeles on Friday to finish their three-game series with Loyola.

Quotable:

St. Francis coach Aaron Dorlarque: “The boys persevered today, believed in each other and found a way to win. I am extremely proud of them.”

St. Francis pitcher Aaron Treloar: “It was an amazing feeling to break that long losing streak to Loyola. I am really proud of my teammates and coaches, because every time people thought we were down for good, we bounced back and that says a lot about our character. We really came together in that big inning and hope to keep the positive momentum going Friday and for the rest of the season.”
